AI and Art

I think that the potential uses and abuses of AI really became public knowledge earlier this year. This is when news items on various chatbots were being published.

I came aware of how AI worked about five years when I was on an IT course on data management.

In last autumn I saw a small documentary on the creation of artworks by an AI program called Midjourney. I was amazed by the shear magnificence of the piece "Théâtre d'opéra spatial” that its creator Jason Allen had produced. The time spent on training the program to produce such a piece of work was immense. The works’ owner admitted he spent weeks on perfecting the text he used to ask Midjourney to produce the final work.

If the piece had been painted or drawn by hand then I guess it would have taken months to design then complete.

Am I worried that computers can produce such works?

The answer is No.

After all even though people have been buying factory produced china for years that hasn’t stopped there being craft potters. I suggest the same is happening in the art world.

Also will primary schools and crèches no longer have painting classes? Will parents stop displaying the results on the fridge door? I don’t think so.
