RTE Short Story Competition 2023

I submitted my entry to this earlier in the week. Just for those who won't know RTE is the Irish state broadcaster. They run this competition each year. It is open to Irish nationals or people living in Ireland. I qualify on both accounts.

It was this competition that got me into creative writing in the first place.

I have entered three times previously, of which two entries I know weren't up to a winning standard. I was disappointed the other occasion but that is life

My story is called "The Marriage Vow". It is about an uninvited guest to the wedding of an ex-girlfriend who makes a faux pas when the groom makes his vows.

The idea came from the Ricki Van Shelton number "I meant Every Word He said." Listen to it and you will realise it could make a good idea for a short story.

I looked through last year's winner and I most likely won't qualify in the top ten which are read out on RTE.

The reason is that it is a bit like entering a Dutch Old Master in a painting contest where the judges seem to prefer 20th Century Impressionists. That is not a criticism of the judges but just the way thinks look to me.
